Libya’s National Heart Centre, located in Tajoura, Tripoli (and popularly referred to as the Tajoura Heart Centre) announced last Friday (27 March) that it had signed an MoU with the Italian NGO UVPP (in collaboration with Rebel Heart and CCPM) in cooperation with the UK-based organization, Aida.
The MoU stipulates that the medical NGOs will perform 450 paediatric heart surgeries over a three-year period. The agreement will go into effect from May this year.
The agreement stipulates the performance of 100 surgeries during the first year, 150 surgeries in the second year, and 200 surgeries in the third year.
The agreement also includes training Libyan medical and paramedical staff in open-heart surgery, both within Libya and in Italy, including doctors and specialized nursing staff, as part of efforts to enhance human resource capabilities and localize medical expertise.
The Tajoura Centre said a new team will also be established and equipped to treat paediatric electrophysiology.
