The Libyan Post Telecommunications and Information (holding) Company (LPTIC) announced last Wednesday (15 October that) a delegation from its Libyan International Telecommunications Company participated in announcing the arrival of the Medusa submarine cable in Marseille.

This participation came within the framework of enhancing international cooperation, developing telecommunications infrastructure, and expanding regional and international connectivity networks.

The ceremony witnessed the official announcement of the cable’s arrival in Marseille, the first landing point in the first phase of the project. This achievement falls within the specified timeline, which aims to connect the countries of the southern and northern Mediterranean via a modern, high-capacity communications network.

The Medusa submarine cable system extends 8,700 kilometres and includes 19 landing points covering the southern and northern coasts of the Mediterranean, with an extension reaching the Atlantic Ocean and Lisbon, making it one of the most important digital connectivity projects between Europe and North Africa.

Signing of Medusa contract in November 2023
It will be recalled that the signing ceremony for the Medusa Cable project, and as reported by Libya Herald, took place in Tripoli back in November 2023.

At the ceremony, Ibrahim Rehab, the GM of the Libyan United International Company (LUIC), one of the newly established private sector companies working in the field of communications and working on the project, told Libya Herald that Libya’s participation in the project would enable it to catch-up in the sector with the rest of the world.

He also said it would enable Libya to export telecoms services to African countries and make Libya an important hub linking Europe to Africa – making Libya a digital gateway to Africa.

He said it will contribute to the digital transformation plan in Libya by diversifying communications sources in a secure manner.

In May 2025, the Medusa project was inaugurated in the city of Misrata
