Acknowledging the briefing of the International Criminal Court to the Security Council Thursday on the authenticity of a video depicting member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Al Dersi, in chains with signs of torture, UNSMIL called on Friday for the speeding up of his investigation.
In its statement UNSMIL said: ‘‘The Mission reiterates the importance of expediting the Libyan Attorney-General’s investigation into Al Dersi’s disappearance and the credible allegations of torture.
UNSMIL urges Libyan authorities to fully cooperate with the Attorney-General and provide all necessary support to ensure a prompt, transparent and independent investigation.
Mr Al Dersi’s family, his colleagues, and the Libyan public demand to know his whereabouts and fate. The Mission renews its call for prompt, transparent and impartial investigations into all cases of serious human rights violations including, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, torture and deaths in custody, across Libya and reminds perpetrators that these crimes may constitute international crimes punishable by the International Criminal Court, which is an independent judicial body.
UNSMIL reiterates its readiness to provide all possible support to these investigations and unequivocally stresses the imperative of ending impunity for these heinous crimes. All perpetrators must be held accountable in accordance with Libyan and international law’’.
