After its development and opening of its new departments by Tripoli based Libyan PM Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba during the weekend, including the Cardiac Surgery Department, the first successful open-heart surgery was performed in the history of Misrata Medical Centre yesterday.

Misrata Medical Center, which has a capacity of 600 beds, has had its 6 main departments developed, as part of the Tripoli Libyan government’s ‘‘Restoration of Life’’ plan in the health sector. It includes the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Intensive Care, Major Operations, Specialized Surgery, Diagnostics, and Kidney Dialysis.

Localisation of healthcare
The Department of Support and Development of Medical Services (DSDMS) said the opening of the developed Misrata Medical Centre comes as part of the Tripoli Libyan government’s localisation of healthcare, whereby the government is investing in training, equipment and refurbishment in local hospitals to enable more health care to be provided locally.

Overseas state-paid healthcare: corruption and nepotism
This will save the Libyan state hard currency abroad and provide more efficiency and value for money. It will also cut on the corruption associated with overseas state health spending. There is much competition for overseas state-paid healthcare which is not distributed equitable, with much corruption and nepotism involved in its allocation.

From the Libyan citizen’s point of view, it will save them paying for overseas healthcare from their private funds and the hardship of travelling abroad.
