GECOL launches prepaid electricity metres pilot project

The recent phased rollout of prepaid electricity metres across different parts of Libya has led to the reduction of electricity consumption during this year’s peak summertime by 204 MW, the Chairman of the state General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), Mohamed Al-Mashay revealed yesterday.

Al-Mashay was speaking yesterday during an inspection visit to his company’s Tripoli headquarters by Tripoli-based Libyan prime minister Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba. The PM was accompanied by the head of the Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, the Minister of Planning, the Minister of State for Prime Minister’s Affairs, the Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs, and the Director of the Sovereign Sector Oversight Department at the Audit Bureau.

1,550 MW added to the network because of overhauls
Al-Mashai had made a presentation of the company’s efforts to confront the summer peak. He praised the Prime Minister’s efforts and his daily follow-up on the company’s plan to implement 22 major overhauls that added 1,550 megawatts to the network. He also praised his approval of a project to supply and install modern (prepaid) meters according to organized phases, which contributed to reducing consumption by about 204 megawatts during the summer peak.

68,000 installed: 500,000 prepaid metres to be installed by end of 2023
GECOL’s presentation revealed that it had to date installed 68,000 prepaid electric metres. It plans to install 500,000 prepaid metres by the end of this year.

Aldabaiba wants more power generated to achieve stability
During his meeting with the Directors of GECOL’s departments, Aldabaiba stressed that what the government has accomplished in the electricity file is not sufficient, stressing the government’s keenness to provide more in order to ensure the stability of the network and accommodate the increasing expansion in the consumption of electric energy.

The Prime Minister praised the efforts of GECOL employees, stressing the need to raise the efficiency of the company’s personnel through training, and following up on the plan approved by the Supreme Council for Energy Affairs, to reach the stage of total stability in the electrical network.

Audit Bureau will support all projects within approved plan
In turn, the head of the Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, praised the efforts made by the public company in order to raise the quality of the performance of the electrical network, stressing the support of the Audit Bureau for all programmes and projects submitted by the company according to the approved plan.
