According to the Italian news agency, Nova, and quoted by several Libyan media sources, the Italian Council of Ministers, based on a proposal by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, has nominated minister counsellor Gianluca Alberini as Italian ambassador to Libya to succeed the current ambassador Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi.
Alberini is scheduled to assume his position as Italian ambassador to Libya by June, while Buccino will move to the Italian embassy in Madrid, Spain, according to Nova.
Before serving as Principal Director for the United Nations and Human Rights for the United Nations and Human Rights at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alberini was a Commercial Counsellor at the Italian Embassy in Libya in 1994, and then chaired the 2009 Global Partnership Working Group during the Italian G8 Presidency.
Alberini also worked at the Italian Embassy in the United States as Counsellor Minister from 2014 to 2018, Envoy for Syria and Coordinator of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS. He studied diplomatic and consular law at the University of Rome La Sapienza.
