London, 20 September 2021:

The Official Spokesperson for the House of Representatives (HoR), Abdalla Belheeg, confirmed that the HoR has started its session today.

He also confirmed that the session will discuss the motion by 45 members to withdraw confidence from the Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba Libyan government. The session will be held behind closed doors.

Most analysts hold the view that there is not a majority in the House to withdraw confidence from the government. They believe that if there was a larger number of members, they would have put their name to the original motion.

It is also believed that most members feel that with the hope of holding elections on 24 December this year, this would not be a good time to weaken the government further.

Equally, there is a group f members who believe this government is doing a relatively good job in view of all the circumstances – including the refusal by the House to approve any version of the draft budgets.

Caretaker government?

Another view holds that withdrawing confidence from the government is purely a symbolic and technical act of protest as the government would continue as a ‘‘caretaker’’ government until elections are held – whenever that may be.
