London, 23 May 2018:

Russia yesterday postponed a proposal for a UN Security Council commission to impose sanctions on six Libyans accused of human smuggling and the management of migrant smuggling networks.

Russia requested further information on the value and feasibility of this measure. The Netherlands, France, Germany, Britain and the United States have called on the Libya Sanctions Committee of the 15-nation Security Council to impose a travel ban and a global freeze on the assets of the six people.

The Russian mission to the United Nations said in a letter to the Committee ‘‘we hope that the relevant members of the Committee will offer some of the ‘ extensive evidence ‘ from ‘ reliable sources ‘ confirming the involvement of the six individuals in illegal activities.
