The Security Directorate in Benghazi today announced that it had appointed a Captain Hamzah Al-Dabla as head of its gun and ammunition licensing board, replacing Major Abdussalam Khalifa Abdulwahid who it said had ended his term. The appointment is said to have been called for by the Beida government’s new acting interior minister, Colonel Younis Belgassem Ismail.
The move is seen as a response to the growing public demands, particularly on social media, for gun control in the city following the death on Wednesday of one of the security directorate’s policemen, Maher Algatani, who succumbed to a random bullet shot while he was sitting at a café with some friends.
In a country awash with weapons, all efforts so far at gun control have been wholly ineffective. Indeed, the general perception is that no government since the revolution has taken the issue seriously at all.
