Libyan National Army commander Field Marshall Khalifa Hafter has had a meeting at his headquarters in Rajmah with the acting mayor of Benghazi, Elabbar to review progress on restoring services to the battered city.
The airport was reopened last month and the port last week, but everal hospitals are still closed, mines planted by the militants remain a major problem and much of the infrastructure is severely damaged. The sewerage system is particularly bad, although this has nothing to do with the recent. It was completely ignored, along with so much else in Benghazi, during almost the entire Qaddafi era. Modernising it is regarded as a key development project in the city.
Hafter returned to Benghazi on Sunday after a whirlwind foreign tour that took in not only Italy and France, but also an overnight stopover in N’Djamena on Friday for talks with Chadian president Idriss Deby. These are said to have focussed on the migrant issue as well as the use of Chadian mercenaries in Libya and the use of Libya as a refuge and operating base by Chadian opposition forces. The head of Chadian intelligence, Ahmed Kogri, has spoken of deep concerns in N’Djamena about Chadian mercenaries in Libya and what they will do when they return to Chad
