Tunis, 20 August 2017:

The only way to bring peace to Libya is to have effective dialogue across the whole political spectrum, Jordan’s King Abdullah told House of Representatives (HoR) president Ageela Saleh today.

Saleh arrived yesterday on a three-day visit to Jordan and was greeted by his opposite number, parliamentary speaker Antif Al-Tarawneh. Today, as well as meeting the king, he had talks with Jordanian premier Hani Al-Malaki.

Malaki said that Amman supported peaceful and political solutions to all crises in the region and rejected military solutions to conflicts, which “only lead to further bloodshed and the incitement of hatred”.

Armed forces commander-in-chief Khalifa Hafter has paid the least two visits to Jordan, two years ago signing a military memorandum of understanding in Amman.

However, this March, when Presidency Council (PC) head Faiez Serraj represented Libya at the Arab League summit in Amman, Saleh protested that the League had violated its rules by inviting someone who had not been approved by the HoR and did not therefore represent the legitimate government. In 2014, the HoR reappointed the interim government led by Abdullah Thinni. Although the international community recognises the elected HoR it does not recognise the Thinni administration but backs the PC and Serraj.
