Tunisia will support changes to the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) to get Libya out of its political crisis, the country’s president, Beji Caid Essebsi, told State Council (SC) head Abdulrahman Sewehli during talks yesterday. Essebsi also urged the various Libyan factions to engage in meaningful dialogue.
Sewehli was in Tunis en route to The Netherlands for talks on the possible amendments to the LPA. He flew out of the ruined Tripoli International Airport on what was its first official outbound flight in three years. Presidential Council head Faiez Serraj used the airport to fly back to Tripoli the day before. In Sewehli’s case, his use of Tripoli International was symbolic as well as practical given the clashes at Mitiga yesterday.
A team from the House of Representatives (HoR) is also due in The Hague as part of a Dutch initiative to activate dialogue between the HoR and the SC.
Under the terms of the LPA, amendments can be made only by agreement between the two chambers.
There are suggestions that HoR president Ageela Saleh himself may lead the HoR delegation. It is reported, too, that the new UN special envoy Ghassan Salamé will turn up in The Hague to ensure that UNSMIL retains its position as lead broker in the dialogue process.
