The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) stated today that it followed the two sessions of the House of Representatives held in Benghazi earlier this week. The Mission noted that the session on October 5 was attended by 102 members; 98 of them voted to amend the House’s internal regulations and to adopt a rotating presidency for the House, with a maximum term of 12 months.

UNSMIL said that it also took note of the second session held on October 6, attended by at least 111 members, during which a new presidency for the House was elected. The Mission acknowledges the election of Mr. Al-Salheen Abdel-Nabi as Speaker of the House, as well as the election of a new presiding body.

Reaffirming its commitment to continued engagement with the House of Representatives, its new presiding body, and all its members, the UNSMIL said it will persist in working with the legislative institution to advance the UN-facilitated political roadmap.

It said this effort aims to unify institutions, implement urgent reforms, and hold elections within the timeframe stipulated in the agreement reached at the Mini-Meeting signed on August 30.

The Mission also underscores its commitment to working with all relevant Libyan parties and international partners to achieve this goal.
