The House of Representatives (HoR) completed the formation of its leadership today by electing Al-Salheen Abdel-Nabi as Speaker, Tariq Al-Ashtar as First Deputy Speaker, and Misbah Douma as Second Deputy Speaker.

This came during its session held today at its Benghazi headquarters.

House of Representatives Spokesperson Abdalla Bleihag confirmed that the members elected new Speaker Abdel-Nabi with the unanimous support of the 110 MPs present at the session.

Bleihaq added that the members unanimously agreed to retain Misbah Douma in his position as Second Deputy Speaker; additionally, Zayed Hadiya was unanimously elected as Rapporteur, and Mohamed Tamer was unanimously elected as Deputy Rapporteur.

The election for First Deputy Speaker saw a contest between Tariq Al-Ashtar, Al-Siddiq Hammouda, and Ezz-Eddin Qweirib. The first round resulted in Al-Ashtar receiving 43 votes, Hammouda receiving 35 votes, and Qweirib receiving 32 votes.

As none of the candidates secured the absolute majority required to clinch the position in the first round, the election proceeded to a second round between the top two contenders: Tariq Al-Ashtar and Al-Siddiq Hammouda.

According to Bleihaq, the second round of voting resulted in the election of Tariq Al-Ashtar as First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives after he secured 63 votes against Al-Siddiq Hammouda’s 47; this decision finalized the First Deputy position and completed the new composition of the House’s Presidium.

Today’s session follows developments from the House’s meeting yesterday in Benghazi, during which the parliamentary term system for the HoR's leadership was approved.

Bleihaq announced that the House adopted the system with a majority of 98 votes out of the 102 MPs present.

The amendment stipulates that the term of office for the House of Representatives leadership is 12 months from the date of election, expiring automatically at the end of this period, with the subsequent parliamentary term commencing upon the election of a new leadership.
