Swordfish at Tripoli Fish Market.

Libya’s Tripoli based Ministry of Marine Resources urged yesterday all fishermen, and those working in the marine fishing sector, to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Minister’s Decree No. (172) of 2021 regarding the fishing and trading of swordfish.

This, in order to preserve fishery resources and ensure their sustainability.

Under the decree, fishing for swordfish in waters under Libyan sovereignty is prohibited during the following periods:

From October 1 to November 30 of each year.

From February 15 to March 31 of each year.

Furthermore, the decree prohibits the fishing, sale, and trading of swordfish that measure less than 90 cm in length or weigh less than 10 kg (total weight), 9 kg (gutted and with gills removed), or 7.5 kg (gutted, with gills, fins, and part of the head removed).

Accordingly, the Ministry emphasizes the necessity of full compliance with the regulations and provisions set forth in the decree and calls upon all fishermen to cooperate and abide by the legislation governing marine fishing activities, thereby contributing to the protection and sustainability of fish stocks.
