Julyana Free Zone is continuing implementation work on its 200,000 tons grain storage silos project located alongside Berth No. 3.
The Free Port reported today that the initiative aims to secure a strategic reserve of essential commodities and grains while enhancing the port's capacity to receive and handle shipments.
Spanning an area of approximately 9 hectares, the project comprises 20 cylindrical steel silos, each with a capacity of 10,000 tons.
Engineer Mohamed Abdel-Salam Ben Attia, General Manager of the Grain Silo Project, stated that the project is considered a strategic national undertaking due to the substantial storage capacity it provides for grains and essential commodities, including wheat, barley, corn, and soybeans.
Contributing to food security
He explained that the project aims to establish a strategic food reserve and increase grain storage capacity, thereby ensuring the regularity of food supplies and bolstering the role of the Free Zone port in receiving and handling grain shipments.
Ben Attia noted that the port is equipped with two grain suction and handling units—manufactured by the Belgian company Vigan—each with a capacity of approximately 600 tons per hour, enabling the efficient unloading and transfer of grain from vessels to the storage facilities.
The project extends beyond the construction of silos; work is also underway by a national company to build a 30/11 kV electrical substation to meet the project's energy requirements. The project also includes an administrative building and a fully equipped maintenance workshop, stocked with the necessary machinery and spare parts for routine maintenance and to ensure the operational readiness of the silo system and its equipment.
Once operational, the project is expected to generate between 200 and 300 jobs across handling, operations, administration, and safety and security sectors, thereby creating new opportunities for the national workforce.
The project’s General Manager confirmed that construction is progressing steadily toward completion, with the work expected to finish within a year.
