The Libyan Authority for Scientific Research (LASR) is discussing a project to launch Libya’s first satellite for monitoring climate and desertification.
This came during a meeting held last Monday (3 August) at the LASR’s Tripoli headquarters. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Faisal Abdul-Azim Al-Abdali, Director General of the LASR and attended by Dr. Salim Hamouda Abu Khreis, a LASR faculty member, and Prof. Dr. Thuraya Jumaa Al-Sharef, Advisor to the Director General.
The meeting reviewed the project’s scientific vision, strategic objectives, and national significance, recognizing it as a pivotal initiative designed to support environmental monitoring systems, track climate change, combat desertification, and enhance the state's capabilities in space technologies.
The proposal underwent extensive scientific discussion, during which the Director General offered technical and scientific observations and guidance. These inputs aim to refine the project, fulfil its requirements, and bolster prospects for its future implementation, aligning with the LASR’s strategic focus on adopting research projects that yield significant national impact.
