Egypt and Libya are studying a proposal for a joint project to construct an 800-kilometre oil pipeline connecting the Libyan eastern city of Tobruk directly with Egypt’s Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.
The proposed pipeline, Asharq Bloomberg reports, estimated to cost over US$ 1 billion, aims to transport Libyan crude oil to Egyptian refineries.
The project follows recent talks between Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and his Tripoli based Libyan counterpart, Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba, in Cairo.
The discussions focused on deepening bilateral energy ties, spanning natural gas, petroleum refining, and electricity grid interconnections. During Libya’s electricity cuts and blackouts, Egypt supplied electricity to eastern Libya.
