The National Development Agency (NDA) announced yesterday that, for the first time in Libya, it is powering a large agricultural project using clean energy. The project is located deep in the Libyan desert 69 km northeast of Sebha (the 87 Umm Al-Dhalal Agricultural Project in the Al-Zighan district of Al-Bawanees Municipality).
It reported that the system aims to power the centre-pivot irrigation systems for an estimated 50 hectares of farmland. This is due to the weak electricity supply in the area.
The project included the implementation of a solar system to power two underground irrigation pumps:
– The first with a capacity of 60 horsepower (HP)
– The second with a capacity of 50 horsepower (HP)
– An additional solar energy system to supply the centre-pivot irrigation tower with the necessary electricity for its efficient operation.
The total production capacity of the implemented solar system is 146.2 kilowatts (kW), which enhances the sustainability of agricultural operations and reduces reliance on the public electricity grid.
The NDA said this is a national initiative towards transitioning to clean renewable energy sources in strategic development projects..
