The Attorney General’s Office reported last Tuesday (21 October) that the investigating authority ordered the detention of defendants accused of attempting to seize LD 135 million from a Libyan Investment and Development Fund company.
It revealed that the Tripoli District Prosecution Office reviewed information submitted by the Internal Security Agency regarding the activity of a criminal gang. The gang’s members attempted to seize 135 million dinars from the funds of the Tatweer Real Estate and Tourism Investment Company, using forged bank documents and cheques.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the gang members conspired to commit the crime of forging bank checks, with the aim of withdrawing the amount from the company’s accounts at the Tripoli Tower branch of the Jumhuriya Bank.
The investigators subsequently detained eight defendants and ordered the prosecution of the remaining contributors to the incident.
