At least 824,131 illegal migrants in Libya in December 2024: IOM

Nearly 11,000 migrants repatriated from Libya and 3,165 Mediterranean fatalities: IOM

(IOM).

The International Organization for Migration reported yesterday, in its Libya Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) (Round 55) covering November to December 2024, that there were at least 824,131 irregular migrants in Libya up to December 2024.

The migrants came from 44 different nationalities with the top five coming from:

  1. Sudan – 29 percent
  2. Niger – 23 percent
  3. Egypt – 20 percent
  4. Chad – 10 percent
  5. Nigeria – 4 percent

The top 5 jobs of illegal migrants are:

  1. Construction workers
  2. Manufacturing or factory workers
  3. Cleaner, domestic worker
  4. Agricultural worker
  5. Salesperson or cashier

The IOM said the migrants were concentrated in coastal Libya as this was where most jobs were available. Specifically, 55 percent of migrants were in West Libya, 35 percent in Eastern Libya and 15 percent in the South.

Of these, 79 percent were adult males, 11 percent were adult females, 10 percent were children of whom 3 percent were unaccompanied minors.
