The Tripoli based Libyan Ministry of Marine Resources issued a circular to the Directors of the Fishing Offices in the coastal areas to take into account the sizes / volumes allowed to be fished in Libyan waters and their breeding seasons – according to the provided guide.
The circular comes within Law No. (14) of 1989 on the regulation of the exploitation of marine resources, the protection of marine resources and the preservation of fisheries in Libya, the Ministry said.
Depleting fish stock
The Ministry added that the danger of catching small, underdeveloped fish in huge quantities leads to the depletion of fish resources in Libyan waters and deprives mature large fish of the most important source of food.
Sustainability
The Ministry further pointed out that fishing for young fish is contrary to all local laws, poses a danger to the marine environment, and exposes fish resources to the risk of extinction.
