16 African, Mediterranean and European states participate in Tripoli’s Trans Mediterranean Migration Forum

16 African, Mediterranean and European states and 12 international and regional organisations participated in the Trans Mediterranean Migration Forum (TMMF) held in Tripoli on 17 July (Photo: GNU).

With the aim of strengthening international cooperation on the issue, ‎16 African, Mediterranean and European states and 12 international and regional organisations participated in the Trans Mediterranean Migration Forum (TMMF) held in Tripoli on 17 July.

‎The Tripoli based Libyan government said the forum aimed to discuss comprehensive solutions to the problem of irregular migration.

During his opening speech at the TMMF, Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, with the participation of Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Déby, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Tunisian Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, that the aim of the forum is to formulate a unified vision that enhances organized cooperation and integrated coordination between the concerned countries. This, he added, is to ‎‎develop the foundations of European-African relations in economy and trade to ensure their continuation.‎

‎Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Déby called for finding solutions to the phenomenon of irregular migration and knowing its causes before that, stressing the need to work on this file within the framework of respect for human rights.‎

‎Italy
For her part, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said that her country places one of its priorities in solving the migration file, noting that the large number of irregular migrants requires intensifying work with the countries of the region, and starts with the development of mechanisms to reduce them within the source countries, stressing her support for this forum, which constitutes a positive step to develop effective solutions to the files of migration and smuggling.‎

‎Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abella thanked the Government of National Unity for its efforts in rescuing migrants and cooperating in the field of irregular migration, calling for collective action to curb the phenomenon of irregular migration and organized criminal networks.‎

Tunisia
The Tunisian Prime Minister, Ahmed Hachani, stressed that the response to the phenomenon of irregular migration must be in its various dimensions, and in joint coordination from the relevant countries.‎
