Libya and Italy discussed the establishment of an Italian-Libyan hospital and medicine manufacturing at the stalled Qaddafi-era Al-Maya medicine factory.
The discussions took place during a meeting yesterday between the Tripoli based Deputy Libyan Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Health, Ramadan Abu Janah, and Italian Ambassador to Libya, Gianluca Alberini, and his accompanying delegation, at the Ministry of Health’s Tripoli headquarters.
The meeting discussed aspects of bilateral cooperation and joint projects between the two countries in the health sector, including opportunities to expand future cooperation horizons between Libya and Italy in the areas of: training medical personnel, exchanging experiences and transferring medical technology.
The two sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in the field of medicine manufacturing through cooperation between Italian companies and the Al-Maya medicine factory, in addition to supporting health facilities in the southern region. They also discussed opportunities to increase Italian investments in the health system in Libya, which will have a positive impact on the quality of medical services provided to citizens.
Activating the 2008 and 2010 agreements and twinning agreements
The meeting also discussed activating the agreements concluded between the two countries in 2008 and 2010, investing in the health field through the establishment of an Italian-Libyan hospital, and activating the twinning agreements previously signed between medical centres in Libya (Sebha Medical Centre, Tripoli University Hospital, Benghazi Medical Centre) and the Italian medical centres specialized with regards to training, exchange of experiences and knowledge, and technology transfer, while programming mutual visits for doctors from the two countries
The Minister of Health stressed the importance of partnership with Italy in the health field, due to its progress in the medical and service fields.
Training and scholarships
The Health Ministry reported that the Italian ambassador indicated his country’s keenness to strengthen this partnership by opening the field of training and scholarships for medical and paramedical personnel inside Italy in accordance with the agreements previously concluded between the two countries.
