Attorney General orders return of Illegal shipment of methyl bromide gas seized at port

the Attorney General has ordered the return of an Illegal shipment of methyl bromide gas seized at Khoms Port (Photo: Local Government Ministry).

In implementation of the order of the Office of the Attorney General, an illegal shipment of methyl bromide gas seized at Khoms port was re-exported to its country of origin yesterday.

Methyl bromide is a toxic gas that was historically used in Libya to sterilize the soil and combat agricultural pests. The shipment was supplied to Libya through the Khoms port on 12 August 2022. Libya has banned the import and use of the gas as it is prohibited in accordance with international agreements and related environmental laws.

The shipment was seized by the Khoms Port Customs Centre because of a discrepancy between what was declared in the documents submitted to customs and the reality of the shipment. The supplying company was obligated to re-export the shipment at its expense.
