At the opening ceremony of the Libya 2022 Renewable Energy expo, a power cut interrupted proceedings as if to underscore the various speakers who stressed the need for the development of the sector as an alternative energy source to hydrocarbon generated power.
The conference was taking place from 5 to 8 March at the Tripoli International Fairgrounds.
Making the keynote speech, Minister of Labour and Rehabilitation, Ali Al-Abed, admitted that clean and renewable energies do not get the attention they deserve in Libya despite the natural advantages the country enjoys.
He noted that his Ministry values the sector and has introduced training specifically on the topic of solar panels. Libya must learn from the experiences of others, he added.
Al-Abed bemoaned the fact that 20,000 barrels of crude oil are consumed each day by the country’s Ubari power station costing Libya half a billion dollars per year.
He highlighted the fact that the centre pivot irrigation systems used in southern Libya were unable to operate due to power cuts. This ended Libya’s grain production in the south leaving the country more dependent on foreign exports.
The Minister revealed that Libya had signed an agreement with U.S. company Valmont to operate the centre pivot irrigation systems using solar energy.
Al-Abed said renewables are also about the transport and delivery of power if they are localised reducing the need for lengthy power lines vulnerable to damage, wilful sabotage and the dependence on peripheral regions to central supplies.
Indirectly criticising his own Aldabaiba government, the Minister said he hoped that Libya will have a clear vision of a decentralised policy on clean and renewable energy that includes know how and technology.
