London, 4 August 2021:

Sebha library has been refurbished and upgraded to serve more visitors, the UNDP reported today.

UNDP said that by upgrading the library it was promoting intellectual life in Libya as l libraries open up windows to the world and give the opportunity for all to access knowledge and improve individuals’ lives.

UNDP informed that the UNESCO Library in Sebha was established in 1953 and was the first library in the south of Libya to spread culture, knowledge, and awareness in the community.

It said many intellectuals, writers, poets, and lovers of reading have visited this library since its opening 68 years ago. It is often visited by students and researchers that study and are able to borrow its unique and rare books.

However, the old library building did not have enough space. Now, with the upgrade, the UNDP said over 200 visitors per week will have access to better services after it constructed a new building containing halls for books, cultural activities and reading rooms, in addition to bathrooms, kitchen and offices.

The project was conducted with support from 13 international partners and the Government of Libya. It comes as part of the UNDP’s Stabilization Facility for Libya promoting learning and knowledge while contributing to enhancing stability in the city.

The project also fulfils the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals number 11 which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Its targets include investment in public transport, creating green public spaces, and improving urban planning and management in participatory and inclusive ways.
