London, 28 July 2021:

An exhibition, Resistance, Rebellion and Revolution, will be held in London documenting the work of the late Libyan satirist Hasan ‘‘Alsatoor’’ Dhaimish from 19 to 29 August at Hoxton 253, N1.

Alsatoor was born in Benghazi in 1955 and came to England in 1975 where he remained in exile and joined the then anti-Qaddafi opposition. He went on to produce thousands of anti-regime and pro human rights cartoons from 1980 onwards under his pseudonym Alsatoor which is Arabic for cleaver (as in meat cleaver).

The organizers say the exhibition will be the first time his satire and paintings that are influenced by his musical tastes in jazz and blues will be on display to the public in London.

The exhibition is curated by his son and daughter Sherif Dhaimish and Hanna Dhaimish.

Sherif said ‘‘It’s a dream of mine to bring the exhibition to Tripoli and Benghazi, something I am working towards for late 2022.’’

Coinciding with the exhibition is a new, live archive of Alsatoor’s work presenting over 5,000 pieces of satire he produced over his long, illustrious career, and a broad selection of his paintings.

There is also a new book by his son, Sherif Dhaimish – Hasan ‘Alsatoor’ Dhaimish – A Libyan Artist in Exile (Pendle Press, 2021), available to pre-order at all bookstores.

Visit alsatoor.com for more information and a biography of the artist.

The exhibition has been supported by Arts Council England and Pendle Press.
