London, 22 February 2021:
UNSMIL head Jan Kubis yesterday condemned and expressed grave concern over the serious incident targeting Tripoli Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha.
‘‘Such reckless acts pose threats to stability and security and aim at derailing the political process and other efforts in support of Libya and its people’’, Kubis said.
He called for ”a full, rapid and transparent investigation into the incident that once again proves how important it is to keep all the arms only in the hands of legitimate authorities”.
Yesterday the U.S Embassy also condemned the incident.
Also reacting to the incident, the Tripoli based Libyan Minister of Defence, Salah Namroush yesterday announced two measures.
- It reported that it had contacted the Minister of Justice and it was agreed to assign the Chief Prosecutor in northern Tripoli to investigate the incident.
- It assigned a force from the Tripoli Military Region to impose security and prevent any security violations.
He affirmed that the security of the capital, Tripoli, and the entire security of Libya are a red line that cannot be compromised, and that it is one of the basic and original tasks of the Ministry of Defence. He affirmed that no one is above the law and whoever causes the undermining of security or the violation of the law and state institutions will be held accountable.
