London, 9 September 2020:
The Tripoli-based Libyan Labour Ministry posted its latest update on employment/unemployment data on Sunday. It has invited jobseekers to register on its new interactive website and is constantly updating its database. It latest report says:
- Libya’s 2020 estimated population: 7.8 million
- Theoretical working population (aged 15-65): 4.75 million – 61 percent of population
- Workforce 2.807 million – 60 percent of theoretical working population
- Workforce 2.414 million 86 percent of workforce
- Estimated unemployed 390,000 – 14 percent
- 128,679 jobseekers registered on Labour Ministry’s database
- 2,349,729 state-sector employees
The topic of unemployment and jobseekers in Libya has taken on an increased political significance with the beleaguered internationally recognized Libyan government based in Tripoli led by Faiez Serraj promising to train unemployed university graduates.
The pledge was made by Serraj during his big speech in reaction to demonstrations at which protestors were shot at by his government recognized security forces.
The incident led to Serraj suspending his Interior Minister for publicly supporting the unauthorized demonstrations. Serraj was also forced into a flurry of decrees in an effort to sedate public anger at fuel, electricity, water, cash shortages as well as widely perceived state corruption.
