London, 4 August 2020:
Libya’s state monopoly, the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), thanked the Joint (Security) Force on Sunday for their efforts in securing the South and West of Tripoli, al-Ruwais and Shakshuk power stations.
The company said that it had come to an agreement with the Joint Force, aligned to the Defence Ministry of the internationally recognized Faiez Serraj government in Tripoli, to secure the power stations of the Central region and the Western mountain and the Western region, to prevent the recurrence of the recent armed attacks on them.
It will be recalled that over the Eid holidays state recognized and paid militias used force of arms to ensure that power was not cut to their areas and that the so-called load sharing did not involve their region. Besides depriving other areas of an equitable share of what little available electricity there was, this action caused the whole network to collapse, resulting in a miserable Eid Al-Adha holiday for many households.
Several household confirmed to Libya Herald that they had done away with slaughtering a sacrificial ram this Eid due to power cuts. Power cuts meant no electricity to power water pumps or to run fridges/freezers to store meat.
Analysis
Last week’s incidents are only the latest evidence – since the 2011 revolution – that any talk of the existence of a Libyan state, legitimate effective government, state centralized and legitimate security forces, or the successful implementation of DDR – are nothing but a sham.
The actions by the western-based Libyan militias over the Eid holidays proved once again that Libya is ruled by militias and by the illegitimate use for force: the guns of rogue militiamen, paid, recognized and legally protected by the internationally recognized and supported Libyan government.
