London, 1 June 2020:
Five civilians were killed and 12 were injured by shelling attributed to the Khalifa Hafter forces in a park in the Sug Il Tlat and Gharbi road areas of Tripoli yesterday. The park at the huge roundabout is a popular picnic spot regularly used by families.
It is not clear why the park was targeted or whether it was another case of bad aim or indiscriminate shelling by Hafter’s forces. Hafter’s critics say his shelling of Tripoli’s civilians is premeditated as part of a terrorising campaign.
The fatal incident indicates that despite being pushed back on a number of fighting fronts, Hafter’s forces are still able to reach the deepest parts of Tripoli.
The forces aligned with the internationally recognized Libyan government based in Tripoli have continued to report claims of advances on various fronts, including progress towards the disused Tripoli International Airport. Fighting continues in and around Asabaa in the Western mountains.
