The UN Security Council yesterday extended its sanctions on Libya until 2020.
The resolution was not unanimous with 13 states out of 15 voting in favour. Russia and China decided to abstain mainly over the extention of the sanctions regime to include rape and sexual violence.
Russia accused the Netherlands and Sweden, which proposed the new sanctions criteria, of populism by attempting to score domestic political points.
Russia felt UN Security Council resolutions should be concerned with threats to international security and not domestic politics or domestic criminal issues.
