London, 11 October 2018:

Italy has officially invited Ageela Saleh, the head of Libya’s parliament, the House of Representatives (HoR), to its planned international conference on Libya.

The news was revealed yesterday by the HoR’s official spokesperson Abdalla Belheeg.

The invitation was delivered in person yesterday by Emanuela C. Del Re, Italy’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during her visit to Saleh at his official headquarters in his hometown of Guba in eastern Lbya.

Very little real details of the deliberations of the meeting were revealed, however, according to spokesperson Belheeg, they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to consolidate them, and the latest developments in the situation In Libya.

The invitation delivery to Saleh at least confirms that the Palermo (Sicily) Libya conference is indeed going ahead.

The Palermo Libya conference was also discussed on Wednesday by the Italian Charge ďaffairs, Nicola Orlando, during his meeting in Tripoli with the High State Council.

There had been some Italian media speculation that it may at least be postponed.

It is very noteworthy, however, that the still official ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Perrone, did not deliver the invitation to Saleh nor did he attend the High State Council meeting.

There has been speculation that Perrone will not be returning to his role in Tripoli. The reasons for this are not clear which has invited much speculation.
