A military C130 cargo plane crashed near the Sharara oilfield killing three and injuring one on Sunday, the Presidency Council has confirmed.
The National Oil Corporation (NOC) has reported that a chartered cargo plane crashed as it took off from the Sharara oilfield airport after having unloaded 18 tons of supplies and maintenance equipment for the oilfield. The plane landed two kilometres from the airport.
Firefighters and ambulance crews rushed to rescue the stricken plane. The injured individual suffering burns was airlifted by air ambulance to a hospital in Tripoli.
The circumstances of the incident are still being investigated, the NOC reported. The military aircraft was operated by the Libyan Air Force and was chartered by the Akakus Oil Operations Company, the operator of the Sharara oilfield. It had been chartered to transport supplies and other field supplies due to closures and security conditions on the road leading to the field, the NOC explained.
