Tunis, 6 December 2017:
Security officials in eastern Libya are clamping down on the harassment of females following complaints. Police in Marj, some 80 kilometres northeast of Benghazi, have arrested at least six young men for harassing schoolgirls and teachers in the town.
The group were punished by having their head shaved in patches.
Last week, Ajdabiya’s Criminal Investigation Department arrested 20 young men accused of verbally harassing schoolgirls and female university students and teachers.
They too had patches of their hair shaved off, security officials said, and their parents were then summoned to collect them.
Ajdabiya CID investigations chief Fathi Al-Sumati also warned that any future occurrences of harassment at schools or the town’s university would be referred to the local public prosecutor and legal action taken against them.
