Tunis, 1 December 2017:
Three years after she was appointed as Libya’s chargé d’affaires to the US, Wafa Bugaighis finally became ambassador today after presenting her credentials to President Donald Trump.
She has been Libya’s chief diplomat in Washington since the Abdullah Thinni government appointed her in December 2014, and was the first woman to hold the role.
Prior to her role in Washington she was the deputy foreign minister, responsible for political affairs from 2012-2014.
Bugaighis holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the Catholic University of America and worked for the Arabian Gulf Oil Company in Benghazi for more than 14 years.
Islamist militants in Benghazi assassinated her cousin Salwa Bugaighis, the lawyer and activist, in June 2014.
