Cairo, 6 October 2017:
The Presidency Council’s foreign minister Mohamed Siala has told all Libyan missions abroad to have nothing to do with Tariq Shuaib, the man appointed last month by Beida-based interim prime minister Abdullah Al-Thinni as his deputy foreign minister. Any diplomatic appointments made by him, Siala has said, are null and void.
Shuaib was acting head of the Libyan embassy in Cairo until this latest appointment and is still based there, doing the job from the embassy – indeed appearing to do both jobs there. His is known to have close connections with numerous Egyptian government bodies – important for the Thinni administration which has few foreign friends.
The Egyptian government, however, is reportedly unhappy at the situation.
Ironically, given Siala’s announcement issued yesterday, Shauib was asked to be the Presidency Council’s deputy foreign minister last November. He rejected the offer.
