Benghazi, 5 September 2017:
The Beida-based interim prime minister Abdullah Al-Thinni has again suspended the director of the foreign media authority, Arish Saeed, less than a week after he ordered his reinstatement.
Saeed was first suspended by Thinni in February. In May, however, he won a court appeal against his suspension; the court ruled that procedures had not been followed and that a disciplinary warning should have been given. For the next three months, Thinni ignored the ruling until last Wednesday, following a further complaint to the court from Saeed that its ruling was being flouted, Thinni ordered the head of the information and culture authority to reinstate him.
The foreign media organisation was incorporated into the information and culture authority in February when Thinni removed Saeed.
In reinstating Arish last week, Thinni ensured that he would not be held in contempt of the court ruling. However, his determination to be rid of him clearly had not vanished. Suspending him today, he has now appointed a committee to investigate him and decide what follows next.
Arish appears to have been unaware of Thinni’s manoeuverings. He turned up for work today at the authority after the Eid holiday as he said he would last Wednesday.
