Tunis, 15 September 2017:
A decision by the Beida-based local government minister to suspend the mayor of Shahat has been countermanded by Major General Abdul Razzaq Al-Nazhuri in his role as military commander of the area from Ben Jawad to Derna.
Local government minister Mohamed Farouk Mahdi had suspended mayor Saleh Ali Mohamed Obeidallah following allegations of corruption and appointed in his place his deputy, Ezzideen Sharif.
In a letter to Mahdi, Nazhuri demanded to know the nature of the accusations made against Obeidallah whom he appointed a year ago after he fired the elected mayor Idris Abdulmajid Abduallah.
Nadhuri’s intervention follows protests at Obeidallah’s dismissal by local elders as well as the town’s youth outside the interim government’s offices near Beida. They met with the deputy head of the Interim Government Affairs Committee, Abdel Rahman Al-Ahairesh, who apparently assured them that he had “no knowledge” of the interior minister’s decision and would to discuss it with him.
The town’s youth are said to have warned Ahairesh that they would attack the interim government’s offices and remove minister if Obeidallah were not reinstated.
