Benghazi, 15 September 2017:
A mine explosion at the ruined Safina (“ship”) building in central Benghazi resulted in the death of one man this afternoon and seriously injured another.
Salem Al-Tarhouni was killed and his brother Amer seriously injured. It is thought that they may have been searching in the ruins of the building for personal property.
The city’s iconic structure, shaped like a ship, was destroyed last April, allegedly by militants holed up in Sabri, in order to give them a better line-of-sight to fire at army units. Part of the building remained, however.
Mines left by the militants still continue to kill and maim locals in significant numbers.
