Benghazi, 15 September 2017:
A car bomb exploded in the car park of Benghazi’s passport department in the city’s Budzira district early this afternoon. Five security guards were reported sightly injured and taken to Jalaa hospital for treatment. Given the force of the explosion, the number of casualties could have ben much higher but being Friday the department was closed at the time. A number of vehicles, however, were damaged.
No one has claimed responsibility and it is not yet clear if the attack was the work of terrorists linked to the so-called Islamic State or carried out by someone with a grudge against the department.
It only recently started printing passports last month after equipment was sent from Tripoli.
