Tunis, 2 August 2917:
The National Forces Alliance (NFA) has re-elected Mahmoud Jibril as its leader for a one-year term.
Eighty out of 91 delegates voted to keep him, with seven abstaining.
The two-day party conference, meeting in the Tunisian resort of Hammamet, has also committed itself to reorganising itself ahead of any elections that may take place in the next year. The aim is to bring in younger people into the party and make it more appealing to the Libyan public.
Also elected at the conference was Tawfik Shuhaybi as the NFA’s general secretary with Asmaa Sariba as his deputy. Bother were previously members of the former General National Congress.
Setting out his vision for the country, Jibril said that there could be no military solution, that there had to be dialogue and reconciliation but that dialogue had to include all Libyans. No one could be excluded. He also expressed confidence that the new UN special envoy, Ghassan Salamé, would oversee the necessary changes to the Libyan Political Agreement to make it acceptable.
