Teams from Morocco, Serbia, Tunisia, Venezuela and two from Spain are taking plan in the sixth Awssu International Beach Volleyball Championship which started yesterday in Zuwara. The national Libyan team is also competing as are teams from the host town as well as from Misrata, Benghazi and two from Tripoli. The teams travelled to the western town via various routes and are being accommodated by the municipal council.
The formal opening ceremony took place at the beach volleyball stadium early yesterday evening and included an air show and a jet ski show. The championship is divided into four groups with each of the 16 teams playing four games a day. The first match saw the Serbia team beat the Misratans 2-0 while Zuwara A team beat one of the Tripoli teams 2-1. Zuwara B team beat Aljazeera team B and Spain’s B team won against Aljazeera C. The Libyan national team defeated Benghazi 2-0.
The event is funded by the Youth and Sports Authority and Zuwara’s Aljazeera sports club. Last year’s championship, also held in Zuwara, was funded by the municipal council.
The contest finishes tomorrow, 22 August.
