Tunis 29 July 2017:
Khalid Othman Suhaib, the imam of the Jebel Al-Rahma mosque in Beida, has been abducted. The incident took place on Wednesday has he was leaving the mosque after Isha (night-time) prayer.
His location is currently unknown, but his brother Nasr Suhaib has effetively accused Salafists of the kidnapping, on his Facebook page calling on them to clarify their position on the kidnapping.
The kidnappers, who are said to have fired shots into the air in celebration after they grabbed him, have not been identified. However, there are uncorroborated allegations that they were members of the Libyan National Army (LNA). The LNA is known to have a significant number of Salafist units within its ranks.
This is not the first attempted abduction of Sheikh Suhaib. In November 2014, he managed to evade a kidnapping attempt at the same mosque.
In June, another cleric at the mosque, Sheikh Tarek Bugarara, was seized by unknown assailants in front of nearby shops.
