Heavy fighting again broke out in Zawia early this morning between the militias of the rival Khadrawi and Ahneish families following the murder of one of the Ahneish commanders.
Islam Jamum died in a hail of bullets as he got out of his car and headed to a café in the centre of town.
Fighting spiked at 3.00 am this morning and was still going on as daylight broke. At least three militiamen are reported to have killed, one of who has been named as Suhail Ben Kora.
Given the intensity of the clashed, Zawia hospital evacuated all its patients.
Rumours that one of the main Ahneish leaders, Ibrahim Ahneish, has been killed have not been verified. Last August, there was an attempt to assassinate him.
Zawia has regularly been the scene of clashes between the Khadrawi and Ahneish.
