Tunis, 23 June 2017:
The US embassy has provided some 5,000 baskets with a variety of commodities for families from Sirte who were caught up in the conflict in the town.
According to the embassy, the baskets have been distributed to the familes, some of whom have returned to their home town, while others are still in Tripoli, Misrata and other towns in the Sirte region.
The baskets started being distributed from half way through Ramadan with the help of the Central Tripoli, Abu Sleem, Misreata and Sirte municipal councils, the embassy added. The distribution will continue until Eid.
“Ramadan is a time for generosity and extending a helping hand to those in difficult circumstances,” said the US ambassador to Libya, Peter Bodde. “On this special occasion, I want to wish our friends in Libya a safe and blessed Ramadan and Eid celebration.”
In its statement, the embassy stressed that the US was committed to strengthening its partnership with Libya and was working “to support a stable, prosperous and democratic Libya”.
