Tripoli, 19 May 2017:
The Presidency Council (PC) has insisted it had nothing to do with the massacre of Libyan National Army (LNA) fighters at the Brak Al-Shatti airbase yesterday despite the fact that the 13th Battalion, one of the units held responsible, comes under its Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The MoD has meanwhile insisted that it issued no instruction to attack the Brak airbase.
The separate statements of denial essentially contain the same information. Both announced an investigation into yesterday’s events. Both also blamed the LNA and its 12th Brigade along with its commander Mohamed Ben Nayel for destabilising the southern region by continuing to attack Tamenhint airbase, 50 kilometres south east of Brak Al-Shatti.
Amid the build-up of LNA forces arond Brak Al-Shatti, the MoD added that it had directed its forces to remain calm.
