Tunis, 15 May 2017:
The Dutch ambassador, Eric Strating, held talks today at the Rajmah military base near Benghazi’s Benina Airport with the head of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Hafter.
It is the Dutch ambassador’s first meeting with Hafter. He is the latest in a small line of European ambassadors heading to the field marshal’s headquarters to discuss the Libya crisis with him. In March, UK ambassador Peter Millet was there, followed a fortnight later by his French counterpart, Brigitte Curmi, and then Italy’s Giuseppe Perrone. UN Special Envoy Martin Kobler made the trip ten days after that.
No details of Strating’s visit or the discussions have been disclosed.
The Netherlands, which is currently sharing a seat on the UN Security Council (Italy has it for 2017, The Netherlands for 2018) has noticeably increased its involvement with Libya in recent months, in particular in trying to contribute to dialogue moves.
