Tunis, 3 May 2017:
After a year’s absence from the political limelight, former General National Congress president Nuri Abu Sahmain has arrived in Conakry today for talks on Libya with Guinea president Alpha Condé. He was accompanied by his deputy Awad Abdul Saddeq and self-declared “prime minister” Khalifa Ghwell.
Condé, who took over the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in January, is hosting a series of meetings with Libyan key players as part of the AU’s efforts at mediation. A month ago, House of Representatives President Ageela Saleh was in the Guinean capital for similar talks and it was announced at the time that other Libyan political figures were going to be invited.
Neither Abu Sahmain nor Abdul Saddeq have been politically active of late although Ghwell continues to maintain that he is Libya’s sole legitimate prime minister. He and his supporters, however, were largely driven from Tripoli in March,
